Iraq Body Count Scrolling Web Counters: Download Page

This page explains how to download and install an Iraq Body Count scrolling web counter for your own website.

Conditions of Use

If you display one of our counters, you must link it to our site http://www.iraqbodycount.net. You may not deface our counters or display them in a disrespectful way.

Several webmasters have asked whether they may adapt these counters for their own use (i.e. for purposes other than displaying civilian casulaties in Iraq). The counter code and installation instructions are copyrighted, and can only be used under certain conditions. Read the conditions here.

Quick Installation Instructions

These are abridged instructions. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are also available. The detailed instructions also include other useful information about the counters. Or, you can try the Really simple cut-and-paste instructions if you don't care about the scrolling headlines and just want a counter that displays the number of civilian deaths.

Note that the scrolling web counters were designed to be installed by webmasters at full-featured websites. They were created before blogging became so popular. If you want to display the counter in a free blogging account or a site like myspace, you'll have better luck using the cut-and-paste instructions.

Click on one of the thumbnails below to see a full-sized demo of the counter and find a download link. Shift-click on the download link to download a zip file containing everything you need to install a counter on your website.
Use a utility like WinZip to unpack the zip file. This will create a folder named IBC/ which will contain a number of .gif images, and one ".js" (JavaScript) file.
Upload the JavaScript and images files to your website. Put them in a directory named /IBC/. That is, place them so that the JavaScript file would be accessible through a URL like this:

   http://www.your.domain/IBC/ibc468.js
```
(If you do not have your own domain and instead have a website with a url like http://www.example.com/username/, then you'll have to do a little extra work. Visit the detailed instructions, scroll about halfway down, and follow the directions in the gray box.)
Now, you can include the counter on any page of your website with a single line of HTML. Suppose you've selected the 468x60 banner. Then the JavaScript file in your IBC/ directory will be named ibc468.js. To place this banner on a page, you'd just add this HTML code to your page

If you selected a different counter, with a JavaScript file of a different name, just use the name of your file in place of ibc468.js above.
You can place the counters pretty much anywhere on your site. Note however, that you can only display one counter per page. If you try to display more than one, the scrolling headlines will not work.

If you still like the preview, then click (or shift-click) on the download link to download a zip file containing everything you need to install the counter on your website.

Please note that the images shown below are not the actual counters: they are simply thumbnail images shown at half of actual size. For comparison, the counter at the top of the page is a real one.

Finally, after you have picked and installed a counter, please return to this page and use the form at the bottom to tell us that you have installed a counter.
